Domain Names (or simply domains) are, in their simplest definition, an address.
And you should considered them one of the best advertising investments you will ever make.

Domains are Internet locations that you type into the address bar of your web browser when you want to visit a website. The .com extension is the most common.
The are three parts major parts to having an online presence.

  • A Domain Name (i.e. www.EugeneAdvertising.com) is one
  • Hosting or a DNS address to point the Domain name to is two.
  • A custom website or landing page, is three.

Power of Domain Names

The Power of Domains is only now being realized by the main stream marketplace. This has not been the case for Oregon Publishing ( Eugene Advertising.com's Parent Company), which has had an online presences that dates back to 1999.

There are 4 ways to obtain the domain name
that you want for your business.
  1. You can go to a Domain Name Registrar and hand register the name. The name you want may already be owned by someone who thought of the name you wanted. Unless the name is a trademark you own, before the domain was registered, you will have to resort to one of the next three options.
  2. Offer to buy the name from the current owner, if they are willing to sell.
  3. Offer to lease the name if they are unwilling to sell.
  4. Wait for the name to drop from the registrar and hope to capture it with either a back-order or hope you can pick it up as described in method #1.

If the Domain you want is in active use, you will likely have to choose another Domain Name.

Domain Value, Selecting a Domain and Leasing a Domain Property

According to statistics compiled by Name Intelligence, Inc. and listed at www.DomainTools.com, there are over 170 million domains registered and 70 million of those are dot-com domain names and tens of thousands of new ones are registered each day. Those numbers include less popular—but still actively purchased and traded—top level domain (TLD) names like .net, .org, .info and .biz, and and country codes like .de (germany) .mx (mexico) whose number collectively total in the millions.

Will the domain you want to register for you business be available?  Maybe, or maybe not, depending on how common your business name is and the target market you are after. If you are after the .com version, and if you are doing business in the U.S.A. you should have, or at least try and have, the .com extension. For many people the interent is not much more than .com and .org.

Value of High Quality Domain Names

What is the value of a domain name?  This is not an easy question to answer. There are many factors and variables to consider when estimating the value of a domain name. The first thing a company owner must consider is the value of the customer.  How much is the one customer worth?  Multiply that by ten or twenty…and it really adds up. Next, having a generic domain that is easy to remember and spell will contribute to the name's worth. Have a name that uses your service, product, geographical location or a combination of the three will also ad additional value.

How to Select a Domain Name

If you are undecided about which domain name to use, or have to settle for something less than your first choice, your main concern should be on choosing a domain name that is memorable, easy to say, and easy to spell.  If yourname.com is taken, then yourname.net, yourname.biz, yourname.info, and yourname.net are worthy alternatives to consider.

Facts to consider when selecting a domain name:

  • Is the name easy for the customer to remember?  A good domain name in a print ad will catch the reader’s eye and be easier to remember.
  • Is it relevant to your business? Having keywords in your domain will not only help your customers remember it, it helps in search engine placement.
  • Is it easy to say? This is good to keep in mind for radio and television ads where the spoken word rules the airwaves.
  • Does the name have any hyphens in it?  It's best to leave out hyphens, especially if you hope to send a lot of traffic to your site from phone calls, voice mail messages, radio and television ads.  Web surfers have gotten used to the Internets form of grammar, so don’t feel you need to replace spaces in your business name with a hyphen. That little horizontal bar may "look" better to you, but it takes twice as long to say a domain name with a hyphen than it does to say a domain name without one.   Try it: Say,”eugene-paintball.com” and “eugenepaintball.com".
  • Try to find a name that matches and/or complements your business name.  Your main goal when marketing your business should always be to promote its name.  If the name of your business is too general, (like A1 Storage) most likely the website name is taken. As an alternative try to select a name that complements the main unique feature of your business or even a marketing slogan that your business uses. Let's look at an example, our friends at A1 Storgae are known for handling your storgae needs and there is never any trouble and their service is exceptional, so a good website name for them could be www.QualityStorageService.com Or if we go more local a carpet cleaner and/or dealer would love to use www.EugeneCarpets.com  when doing business in Eugene Oregon. If you use this approach, make sure that you select a name, and slogan that you are prepared to live with. Picking a domain is something you really want to think through. Very much like picking the name of your business!
  • Does it effectively represent the service you offer or product you sell? This helps reinforce the your service(s) and product(s)
  • Does it have a “dot-com” extension?  While .net, .info, and .biz are worth considering the “dot-com” extension is still the most frequently used extension.
  • Leave out extra legal filler terms like inc, co, llc, and assoc.  The .com is short for commercial, so the extra corporate information can be see as redundant and make the name more difficult to remeber and pronounce.
  • Direct Navigation - This is becoming ever more popular as domain names are thought of as places that "should" be there. Can a user type your domain name extension directly into their browser and reach your site without even searching? How valueable would that be to your business? This approch works for local businesses extremly well. Knowing that you can be found using your state, city, or town's name in conjuction with your business service or product becomes invaluable to your buiness and to customersyou didn't know could find you so easily. There is even an added benefit given to your local or "geo-domain name" when getting racked and placed while the search enegines are indexing the internet. The robots, spiders, and other internet crawlers are placing more weight on geo-targeted domains. They understand the value of local search and are getting local with it.
  • Search engines are more readily pick-up keyword rich domains, which will result in your domain and website showing-up more frequently. This applies to local names and business and even directories that are following local internet advertising. But this doesn' mean you should keyword stuff your domain name. That leads us to finding a name that relates to your business without being too long to understand. Even if you think www.DoorsWoodDoorsWeatherDoors.com is strong in keywords, it makes for a poor business domain name. But there is more to these type of domains.
  • Avoid long acronyms.  Four letters is about as many studies show people can easily remember when a company has reduced its website address to an unfamiliar acronym. Mixing up the order of letters and/or numbers is more likely to happen. A Physician’s practice in Portland Oregon is called
Casey Eye Institute and they chose to go with- www.ohsucasey.com -   A better choice would have been www.CaseyEyeInstitute.com.
What Are Your Competitors Doing?
  • Are your competitors currently using the internet to market? If so you should be there too. EugeneAdvertising.com is here to offer you a quality domain name for lease before your competitor comes and takes the offer.
  • What domain names are they using? Are they using locally targeted names? .com or .net or .org
  • Would your target audience choose your domain name over theirs? Can they easily remember or natually type in the domain name?

A Reasons to Move Fast
  • There is a limited supply of quality unique domain names. There is only one domain of each name. There can never be 2 www.EugeneAdvertising.com domain names. Each is 100% unique.
  • As more and more people choose to work from home, and business see the value of having more than one name, the demand has increased for domain names.
  • Geography based names frequently used in the Real Estate market are being snapped-up quickly and are frequently searched on by Real Estate Shoppers. Particularly in high-demand markets. For example such names as www.EugeneHousing.com or www.LaneCountyHousing.com are perfect for a local business to use to drive traffic to their current website or set up an independent website or lander page to pre-sell and then direct vistors to the main site.
Other Considerations
  • You can use your domain name to host email addresses. Which looks more professional and is natually more easy to remember: EugeneRentalHomes@yahoo.com or Sales@EugeneRentalHomes.com
  • Make sure your website resolves to both with the “www” and without before  printing your domain name on business cards, brochures and other marketing/contact material. Having your website resolve at both www and without the www is seen by the search engines as duplicate content and you website may receive a penalty in its ranking and placement. Go ahead and try it with this website. either with or without

Why You Should Purchase More Than One?

In addition to your main website address, you might also consider registering, leasing or buying domains on the aftermarket, alternative web addresses.
Here are some ideas and guidelines to follow if you are thinking about stocking-up on domain names:

  • At 8 to 10 dollars a year, domains are not particularly expensive, but remember this a yearly expense and 100 domains adds up i.e. $800-$1000
  • Register specialty domains that fit your profession.  EugeneAdvertising.com can keep you apprised of top-level domains, like those listed above. You can expand your marketing reach by purchasing multiple domain names that you can use as mini-websites, landing pages, or forward them to your main website.
Quality Domain Names Are Practical Real Estate

(Act quickly to get the name that best represents your business!)

Our domain names are superior because in most cases they describe your region or profession they will generate traffic through their name alone.

  • A Quality Domain Name Delivers a Superior Return-On-Investment in ease of use when referencing your online location or website
  • They are highly descriptive, easy to find, easy to promote, and easy to remember business names in most cases carry a “dot-com” extension.  Some search engines send customers to the “dot-com” domain name if a customer forgets to type the extension into the address bar.

  • Internet marketing studies show that promoting a “dot-com” web site is much easier and less confusing  to potential customers.
  • Internet marketing studies show that a customer may remember the domain name but will often forget hyphens, resulting in your customers going to your competitor’s websites.
  • Our domain names have an average cost of $1.00 to $10.00 per day.  One of the best advertising investments you will ever make.
